Overview: Plans and Coverage

The ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program provides coverage for dogs, cats, and even horses – a unique inclusion among pet insurers. Policies are administered by a partner (C&F Insurance Agency), meaning the ASPCA itself doesn’t underwrite the insurance but collects royalties from each sale to support its animal welfare mission. With ASPCA’s Complete Coverage plan, you get accident & illness insurance that has no upper age limit for enrollment of cats or dogs. This plan is notably broad, covering many treatments that some other insurers exclude.

For example, ASPCA’s standard policy covers hereditary and congenital conditions, alternative therapies like acupuncture, behavioral issues, prescription medications, exam fees, and even microchipping. Such extensive coverage means pet parents won’t need to buy a bunch of add-ons just to get common services covered.

In addition to the main Complete Coverage (accident & illness) plan, ASPCA offers an Accident-Only plan for a lower cost. The accident-only option covers emergencies like broken bones or swallowed objects but won’t pay for illnesses (which the full plan would). It’s a budget-friendly choice if you only want catastrophic coverage.

There’s also an optional Preventive Care add-on (two tiers: Basic and Prime) that helps pay for routine wellness items like vaccines, dental cleanings, annual exams, and screenings up to a set annual limit. (However, keep in mind that wellness add-ons reimburse a fixed amount per item – if you don’t use all the included services, you might pay more in premiums than you get back in benefits.)

What’s not covered? Like all pet insurers, ASPCA does not cover pre-existing conditions (any illness or injury noted before enrollment) aside from curable issues that haven’t recurred for 180 days. Preventive care is only covered if you purchase the wellness add-on. Additionally, certain elective or non-medical expenses (e.g. grooming, breeding, food for general health, or vitamins) are excluded. These exclusions are fairly standard across the industry.

Pricing and Value

ASPCA Pet Insurance’s premiums vary based on breed, age, location, and chosen coverage options.

Generally:

  • Accident-Only plans: start around $15–$20/month.
  • Accident & Illness (Complete Coverage): about $50/month for dogs, $20–$25/month for cats.

Your costs depend on deductible ($100–$500) and reimbursement percentage (70%–90%). ASPCA also offers a 10% multi-pet discount. Its broad coverage (exam fees, alternative care, behavioral therapy) may save money in the long run compared to cheaper but narrower plans.
