Citi Strata Elite Credit Card Coming Soon: Should You Wait for This New Premium Card?
July 1, 2025

If you're in the market for a premium credit card, you might want to hold off on your decision. Citibank just announced they're launching a brand new high-end credit card called the Citi Strata Elite this fall, and it could shake up your options in a big way.
What's the Citi Strata Elite All About?
The Citi Strata Elite is Citi's attempt to get back into the premium credit card game. Think of it as their answer to popular cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express. While we don't have all the details yet, this card is clearly designed for people who want top-tier rewards and benefits.
This isn't Citi's first rodeo with the Strata brand. They've already launched two successful cards in the family: the Citi Strata Premier® Card with a $95 annual fee for travel enthusiasts, and the Citi Strata Card with no annual fee for everyday spending. The Elite will sit at the top of this lineup as the premium flagship option.
Why This Matters to You
Here's the thing: when big banks compete for your business, you win. With Citi jumping back into the premium card space, you can expect:
- Better rewards programs across all premium cards
- More generous sign-up bonuses to attract new customers
- Enhanced benefits like travel perks and purchase protections
- More options to find a card that fits your spending habits perfectly
What We Know So Far
Unfortunately, Citi is keeping most details under wraps until the official launch. Here's what they've confirmed:
- Launch date: Third quarter of 2025 (so sometime between July and September)
- Target audience: People who want premium rewards and benefits
- Purpose: To compete directly with other high-end cards
- Family positioning: Will be the premium flagship above the existing Strata Premier and regular Strata cards
What We Don't Know Yet
The big questions everyone's asking:
- How much will it cost? No word on the annual fee yet, but expect it to be significantly higher than the $95 Strata Premier
- What are the rewards? We don't know the earning structure or bonus categories
- What benefits come with it? Travel insurance, airport lounge access, and other perks are still mysterious
- How do you qualify? Credit score and income requirements haven't been announced
Understanding the Strata Family
To better understand where the Elite fits, let's look at Citi's current Strata lineup:
Citi Strata Card (No Annual Fee)
- Welcome Offer: 30,000 ThankYou points after spending $1,000 in 3 months
- Key Features: 5x points on Citi Travel bookings, 3x on supermarkets and gas stations, quarterly self-select bonus category

Citi Strata Elite (Coming Soon)
- Expected Positioning: Premium flagship to compete with Chase Sapphire Reserve ($795) and Amex Platinum ($695, See Rates & Fees)
- Likely Features: Higher earning rates, premium travel benefits, airport lounge access, concierge services
- Expected Annual Fee: Likely $495-$695 based on competitive positioning
How Does This Compare to Other Premium Cards?
To understand where the Strata Elite might fit, let's look at what's already out there:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve just raised its annual fee to $795 but offers strong travel rewards and a $300 annual travel credit
- American Express Platinum is doubling down on travel benefits and has announced it's making its "largest investment ever" in the card
- The Strata Elite will need to offer something special to compete with these established players
Should You Wait or Apply for a Card Now?
This depends on your situation:
Wait if you:
- Aren't in a rush to get a new card
- Want to see all your options before deciding
- Are curious about what Citi might offer
- Already have a relationship with Citigroup
- Want the most premium benefits available
Don't wait if you:
- Need a new card soon for upcoming travel or expenses
- Have found a current card that meets your needs perfectly
- Want to take advantage of a limited-time offer on another card
- Are satisfied with the current Strata Premier or regular Strata benefits
Consider the Current Strata Cards if you:
- Want to establish a Citi relationship before the Elite launches
- Don't need ultra-premium benefits
- Are looking for good value at the $95 (Premier) or $0 (regular) annual fee levels
What This Means for Your Wallet
Competition in the credit card space almost always benefits consumers. When banks fight for your business, they typically:
- Increase sign-up bonuses
- Add new benefits without raising fees
- Improve customer service
- Create more flexible redemption options
Even if you don't end up choosing the Strata Elite, its launch could make other premium cards more attractive.
The Real-World Impact
Let's be honest about what premium cards are really for. They make sense if you:
- Travel frequently and can use travel benefits
- Spend enough to justify the annual fee through rewards
- Want premium customer service and protections
- Can pay off your balance in full each month (the rewards don't make up for interest charges)
Smart Moves While You Wait
If you're interested in the Strata Elite, here's what you can do now:
- Check your credit score - Premium cards typically require excellent credit
- Review your spending patterns - Understanding where you spend most helps you choose the right rewards structure
- Research current offers - Know what's available now so you can compare when the Strata Elite launches
- Consider your relationship with Citi - Existing customers might get better offers or easier approval
- Try a current Strata card - The regular Strata or Strata Premier could help you build a relationship and understand Citi's rewards ecosystem
Important Update: Cash Back Changes
Before considering any Citi premium card, be aware of an important change coming August 24, 2025. Citi announced that cash back redemptions for the Citi Strata Premier® Card will be reduced from 1 cent per point to 0.75 cents per point.
The workaround: This devaluation only applies if you hold a Strata Premier as your only Citi card. To maintain the 1¢ per point value, you can hold a Citi Double Cash Card or Citi Custom Cash Card alongside your premium card.
Good news: This change doesn't affect the regular Citi Strata Card, which maintains its 1 cent per point cash back value.
The Bottom Line
The Citi Strata Elite represents an exciting development for anyone interested in premium credit cards. While we're still waiting for the important details, the fact that Citi is re-entering this space after building a successful foundation with the Strata and Strata Premier suggests they're confident they can offer something compelling. Whether you should wait for it depends on your timeline and current needs. If you're not in a rush, it might be worth seeing what Citi brings to the table.
The competition alone could make all premium cards better deals. The existing Strata cards also provide excellent options for those who want to get started with Citi's ecosystem or don't need ultra-premium benefits. Building a relationship with Citi through one of these cards could even position you for better Elite offers when it launches.
