Delta swaps Lyft for Uber: what the new Uber partnership means for your SkyMiles

December 12, 2024

Picture of a plane's wing

Delta has announced an exciting new partnership with Uber that will allow SkyMiles members to earn miles on select Uber rides and Uber Eats deliveries. This partnership, which officially begins tomorrow, replaces Delta’s previous collaboration with Lyft. Let’s jump in.

How to Earn Delta SkyMiles Through Uber

  1. Open the Uber app on iPhone or Android
  2. Navigate to Account > Settings > Rewards
  3. Select Delta SkyMiles as your preferred loyalty program
  4. Enter your SkyMiles number and link your accounts

Here’s how you can earn SkyMiles through the new partnership:

  • Airport Rides: Earn 1 mile per dollar spent on UberX rides to and from airports
  • Premium Rides: Earn 2 miles per dollar spent on premium services like Uber Comfort or Uber Black
  • Uber Reserve: Earn 3 miles per dollar spent when you schedule rides in advance through Uber Reserve
  • Uber Eats: Earn 1 mile per dollar on restaurant and grocery orders of $40 or more

How This Compares to the Previous Lyft Partnership

The new Uber partnership differs significantly from Delta’s previous arrangement with Lyft, which allowed members to earn 1 mile per dollar on all U.S. rides, regardless of the destination or ride type. With the new Uber deal, standard UberX rides will only earn miles if they start or end at an airport.

For frequent travelers who regularly take rides to and from airports or prefer premium Uber options, this new partnership could provide substantial value. However, if you primarily use rideshare services for everyday transportation around town, the previous Lyft arrangement may have been better.

Maximizing Your SkyMiles Earnings

To get the most out of this new partnership, use these strategies:

  • Use Delta-Branded Credit Cards: Miles earned through the Uber-Delta partnership stack with miles earned from Delta credit cards, allowing you to double-dip on rewards:

  • Opt for Premium Rides or Reserve: When possible, choosing premium rides or using Uber Reserve will earn you 2-3 miles per dollar instead of just 1 mile per dollar on standard airport rides.
  • Batch Your Uber Eats Orders: Since Uber Eats orders must be at least $40 to earn SkyMiles, consider combining smaller orders to meet this threshold.

Additional Integration Features

Beyond just earning miles, the Delta-Uber partnership includes other useful integrations:

  • Post-Flight Discount: SkyMiles Members who log into WiFi on their flights will receive an offer of 30% off to book an Uber for pickup when they land.
  • Flight + Ride Booking: Customers who purchase a flight using the Fly Delta app will be able to seamlessly add an Uber Reserve booking to secure their ride to and from the airport.
  • Airport Shuttle Expansion: Uber is expanding its affordable Airport Shuttle product to Atlanta after successful launches in New York City, giving travelers more options.

Important Note About Uber Loyalty Partners

If you currently earn rewards with other Uber partners, there’s an important limitation to be aware of: you can only earn with one loyalty partner at a time. When you link your Delta SkyMiles account, you’ll need to unlink other loyalty accounts like Marriott Bonvoy or Air Canada Aeroplan. This means you cannot “double dip” rewards across multiple programs with the same ride or order, unfortunately.

Bottom Line

While this new partnership might not be as generous as the previous Lyft arrangement for everyday rides, it offers excellent earning potential for airport transportation, premium rides, and advance bookings. For frequent travelers who already use Delta and Uber, this collaboration provides a simple way to accumulate additional SkyMiles without changing your regular habits.

With SkyMiles valued at approximately 1.2 cents each, these earnings might not fund your next international business class ticket on their own, but they can certainly help you reach your next award flight faster.
